Causas Digitales is a digital initiative by JAAKLAC that works with Latin American and Caribbean youth. They work to promote digital rights through meaningful participation of young people in designing and implementing activities for them and their peers.

They partnered with Tactical Tech to co-create with young people (12 to 24 years old) the Data Detox Latine, a social media campaign to raise awareness about digital privacy, security and well-being among young people in Latin America. Based on the Data Detox Kit content, Causas Digitales collaborated with 8 organisations that worked in pairs in their respective countries: Hiperderecho & Sin Tabúes from Peru, Fundación InternetBolivia.org & Colectivo Coroico Art, Hijas de Internet & Escuela Pedro Poveda from Mexico, and Conexión Educativa & Unidad Educativa Jaime Roldós from Ecuador. This resulted in a diverse groups of digital rights activists, young people and educators working together and critically reflecting.

The project was implemented in two phases. The first phase consisted of a series of online workshops and asyncronious work where around 50 participants (youth and adults) reviewed Data Detox Kit materials, collected relevant resources from the region and built a cross-national space for cooperation and reflection on the impact of digital technologies on young people across Latin America. The work developed at this stage resulted in the Data Detox Latine, a social media campaign with a series of characters to showcase the different challenges young people are confronted with in their digital lives and introduce tips and recommendations on how to address these challenges. The characters and storylines were created using mood boards and character-building methods.

The second phase of the project started with the launch of Data Detox Latine on social media, coordinated by all organisations involved. The campaign was shared across Instagram and Twitter outreaching youth in Latin America. To wrap up the project and reflect on the learnings and outcomes, participants and organisations involved recorded a two-part episode of a podcast.
